HistoryKempinski Palace Portorož - a hotel which
has a lot of stories to tell ....
Today, the Kempinski Palace Portorož
bears the most important testimony to a flourishing thermal town of
Portorož, one of the most important European SPA and seaside resorts in
the second half of the 19th century, alongside Grado, Lido in Venice
and Opatija, all part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
Portorož first established itself as a tourist destination
between 1908 and 1912 when the
Palace Hotel was built. It was designed by the Austrian architect
Johannes Eustachio and opened in 1910.
The following years after the opening of the
Palace
Hotel
could record a steady increase of visitors
coming to Portorož with a final record in 1913 with 7250 guests.
The old Palace of that era
was something out of the ordinary. The opening itself was a social
event and something unique. The Habsburg Vienna had a significant
influence on the hotel's architectural image and its offer; the events,
parties, services and offers were suited to its requirements.
The luxurious Palace Hotel was built as a wellness and tourist
centre, with an exceptional SPA
infrastructure for that period. It had more than one hundred rooms with
rich décor, luxury dining halls, bars, a representative entrance
section and garages.
Electrical wiring and elevators as well as the
air-conditioning equipment were the pride of the hotel since at that
time those facilities have been singular.
The history of the hotel Palace
was influenced by famous names such as Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the
Austro-Hungarian throne, Marcello Mastroianni, Mina, Yul Brynner, Tito,
Bobby Fischer and many other celebrities.
Due to its architecture,
a mixture of various historical styles with elements of the Vienna
Secession, the old Palace Hotel was declared as cultural monument in
1980, whereas the surrounding idyllic park gained the title of a
manmade natural monument.
The renovated Kempinski Palace Portorož
now has kept the legacy of the architecture and architectural
characteristics of the old Palace.
The respect for history and tradition is intertwined
with the newest guidelines of the present and future.
The Kempinski Palace Portorož is located
in the very heart of the Mediterranean Seaside of
Portorož.
The Kempinski Palace Portorož is
surrounded by a hundred-year-old park in the immediate vicinity of the
Adriatic Sea.
It is situated at a marvelous location in the very centre of
the cosmopolitan tourist town Portorož
with its mild Mediterranean climate and more than hundred years of SPA
tradition, not far from the medieval pearl, the town of Piran.
The description of being located between Venice
and Vienna accrues from historical connections with
Portorož.
