The Relais Alla Corte del Sole is an ancient monastic village skillfully transformed into a charming romantic Hotel, between Tuscany and Umbria. The site is the sixteenth century even if the original dates back to the fourteenth century, when used as a refreshment during pilgrimages between Chiusi, Castiglione del Lago and Arezzo.
History
There is a harmonious blend of rustic dwellings in the architecture of the Relais, in which the antique uses have been knowingly re-valued and redesigned, giving full respect to the features passed down over the centuries. Certain antique structures that had been modified or destroyed over the years have been restored. This ancient hamlet dates back to the sixteenth century but the original core appears to have originated halfway through the fourteenth century when it belonged to the Order of St. Stephen. It could have been defined as a resting area and landmark for religious travellers and pilgrims heading towards Chiusi, Castiglion del Lago, and Arezzo.
This information supports the theories of historians who believe that the Renaissance settlement was built over early-Christian foundations, which accounts for its exclusively religious use during the late-Middle Ages. It is worth mentioning that even Saint Margaret appears to have rested here after the death of Arsenio, before she permanently settled in Cortona. One of the finest assets of the restoration of the Relais lies in the true history that has been revived, so that even today the silence and peace that characterize it give its guests a sense of well-being for both the mind and body. At the same time, the needs of the modern world are met, a world in which we constantly search for space and atmosphere on a human scale, in which we can pass our free time.
The Relais Alla Corte del Sole-at the sun’s court- is located near Lake Trasimeno, facing Cortona, and at the border of the Sienese territory of Montepulciano. So you may enjoy the view of one of the most evocative lakes in Italy, while at the same time being very close to some of the most important cities in Tuscany for art, monuments, and landscapes: Cortona, Montepulciano, and Siena.
