General Information

Kastellos Village comprises of two complexes. Each one of these complexes consists of 4 traditional stone houses, which offer all modern comforts and a magnificent ambience to all guests. The complex is ideal for those wishing to escape everyday routine and relax enjoying the Cretan countryside.

What is Kastellos all about? Nothing more than a dream of Mr Yiannis (owner) to rebuilt each one of these houses before falling apart, where his family was living in many years ago. The love of the village and his desire to leave the stress of the big cities, made him start this project in 2005 and after 4 long years the houses where ready to operate in 2009. Each one of the them is named after the owner’s family which lived in these houses , where Captain Antonis was the name of his father who was leading a rebel team that fought on the 2nd world war and they were calling him Captain Antonis, Anezina, his grandmother who lived 110 years due to the Cretan way of life. The most amazing thing about her was that she never used any medicine when she was ill, not even an aspirin, only herbs. Mr Barbagiannis, his beloved uncle, who fought in Albania during the 2nd world war and did something incredible that a lot of us would not believe. After the end of the war he walked back from Albania to Kalamata took the boat to Kissamos and then again walked to his house in Kastellos. The complex is ideal for those wishing to escape everyday routine and relax enjoying the Cretan countryside, it’s for those who want to contact the nature, the wild life, the tastes of the local food where you can ask Miss Maria down the road to cook something for your dinner, and of course to meet the people and their habits.

CRETAN DIET
If we wanted to sketch a rough pattern of the Cretan diet in the 1960s, we could say that the core of this diet consisted of food derived from natural sources, whereas food of animal origin was more peripheral in nature. In general, people consumed seasonal products, available in the wider local area, which underwent minimal processing or none at all.

Fresh and dried fruits, pulses, endemic wild herbs and aromatic plants, and rough cereals, whose cultivation was favoured by the regional climate, were consumed in great amounts and constituted the base of the Cretan diet during that period. Dairy products were consumed on a daily basis in low to moderate quantities. Poultry and fish were consumed on a weekly basis in moderate quantities, whereas red meat was consumed only a few times a month. The main supply of fat was effectuated by olive oil, which was used not only in salads but also in cooking, unlike the northern European countries which primarily used animal fat.  Another essential feature of the Cretan diet in 1960s was the moderate use of alcohol, mainly red wine which accompanied meals. Finally, the most common dessert was fresh fruits, while traditional pastry based on honey had been consumed a few times a week.

The Cretan diet of the 1960s has quite a few differences compared to other Mediterranean diets of the same period. More specifically, the study of Seven Countries has demonstrated that in Crete the consumption of olive oil, pulses, fruits and potatoes has been higher compared to the consumption of the same type of food in South Italy.  On the other hand, red meat, fish and cereals were consumed in smaller quantities.
